Lady Gaga is one of those rare stars whose name echoes around the world.

Born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, she first burst onto the scene in the early 2000s after withdrawing from New York University (NYU) to chase a career in music. Gaga quickly became known for her garish, spontaneous style and antics, once wearing a dress made from real, raw meat to the 2010 VMAs.

Now, in 2025, at 39 years old, she remains at the top, continually reinventing herself as a singer, co-writer, actress, and activist.

But what makes her tick? What kind of inner world fuels such artistic range, from club anthems like “LoveGame” to heart-wrenching ballads like “Always Remember Us This Way”?

Those questions got me thinking.

I’ve always been a fan of Lady Gaga, but I realized I’d never really thought about her personality before writing this piece. Being a fan is one thing; writing an expository piece about one of your favorite artists' personalities is something else entirely, lol.

But I did it.

And, it was honestly exciting for me to infer Gaga's personality using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), the Enneagram, and the Big Five (OCEAN) model.

Here's what I found:

  • MBTI: Lady Gaga is likely an INFJ. She's intense, deeply emotional, driven by meaning, and always thinking several layers beneath the surface.
  • Enneagram: Lady Gaga fits the profile of an Enneagram 4, or more specifically, Type 4 with a 3 wing (4w3). She's someone who wants to be true to herself, but also wants that truth to be seen, felt, and recognized by the world.
  • Big Five: Lady Gaga scores high in Openness (clearly), is Conscientious in how she crafts her work, Introverted but shows Extraversion when performing, comes off as warm and Agreeable in interviews, and has been open about her struggles with anxiety, hinting at higher Neuroticism.

Now, Gaga hasn’t publicly shared her test results. And no, I didn’t bring her in for a formal BrainManager personality assessment.

So, why am I so confident? Because her personality is written all over her career.

It’s in her interviews, performances, lyrics, and how she blends qualities that don’t usually go together. From the raw vulnerability of A Star is Born to the fearless ambition behind a two-decade-long career, the clues are all there for anyone paying attention.

So, if you're a Little Monster (her loyal fan) or are simply curious, by the time you’re done reading, I think you’ll see it too.

Let’s get started.

Lady Gaga's MBTI Type and Cognitive Functions — INFJ, The Advocate

The Myers-Briggs categorizes people across four key trait combinations: Introversion vs. Extraversion, Intuition vs. Sensing, Feeling vs. Thinking, and Judging vs. Perceiving. When I connected publicly known aspects of Gaga's personality with what we know about the MBTI's 16 personalities, I concluded that her primary cognitive orientation falls in line with the INFJ type, also referred to as “The Advocate”.

Now, it makes sense that we haven't really seen anyone like Lady Gaga, as INFJ is arguably the rarest personality type.

Let's discuss her INFJ personality type:

(I) Introverted: Yes, really

This might seem somewhat counterintuitive, given that Lady Gaga is a celebrity after all. But introversion or extraversion does not usually come down to how comfortable an individual is on stage; it's more about how they prefer to live in those moments when they are not in the spotlight.

Lady Gaga has, in multiple interviews with the media, explained how much she seeks solitude to recharge her social batteries and creative juices. Gaga has also very publicly shown spells during which she was overwhelmed by constant public attention, followed by long breaks away from the lights and cameras.

In her 2016 documentary, “Gaga: Five Foot Two”, audiences were privy to the moments of quiet vulnerability that typically fill those said long breaks.

All of these hint at her being closer to the introversion end of this spectrum, rather than being an extrovert, as you would expect for a first-rate entertainer.

(N) Intuitive: Always dreaming ahead

If Gaga's introversion is up for debate, her intuition certainly isn’t. She has built her entire career on exploring possibilities that others typically don't even imagine. Her meat dress to the 2010 VMAs, for example.

At some point, every Lady Gaga outfit in public made huge headlines in the tabloids. From 8-inch heels to heelless shoes to other various daring dresses.

Also, in the movies she's acted in, such as “An American Horror Story,” “A Star is Born,” and “House of Gucci,” she earned critical acclaim for her ability to portray a range of roles, from horror to ambition and love, with the same level of emotional intensity.

These music tracks and movies are not the focus of discussion here. Rather, the focus is on her ability to reinvent herself over the years, to show appreciable personal growth, deeply showcasing all these ranges, without losing the core of her identity.

(F) Feeling: Heart first, always

Another very visible aspect of her character is her tilt towards feeling on the Feeling-Thinking spectrum; however, more on the introverted side rather than extraverted feeling.

While Gaga had her fair share of wild, exploratory artistry, she has really settled into her pace as a deeply emotional artist across music and film.

We cannot forget her guest performance with Tony Bennett—his last stage performance before his death. Even though his memory had been significantly decimated by Alzheimer's, he remembered Lady Gaga immediately when she came on stage.

They performed “Fly Me To The Moon” together one last time; Gaga, helping him through as he appeared to forget some of the lines.

It was a very emotional scene, deep with meaning and power, that served to show the depth of Lady Gaga’s relationship with Tony Bennett, and her Feeling trait.

Then, of course, there is her well-recorded activism, promoting causes generally surrounding mental health, LGBTQ+ rights, and trauma survivors.

While almost every celebrity ultimately represents one or two similar causes, hers carry a level of authenticity and authority that shows a genuine commitment to these causes.

All of these are why I firmly believe Lady Gaga belongs on the “Feeling” end of this spectrum.

(J) Judging: Intentional under the chaos

The “Judging” personality is structured in their approach to everything, including their career, personal philosophies & conduct, artistry, and advocacy. Lady Gaga fits almost perfectly in this class.

Even though Gaga has had chaotic periods in her career, there is a strong underlying sense of precision and purpose beneath all of that wildness and spontaneity. Behind how she has been able to navigate her way and succeed so exponentially, without losing relevance.

When you listen to her interviews, you will note how Lady Gaga responds in a meaningful and reflective way. That is a classic “Judging” characteristic - not rigid, but deliberate and strategic.

Lady Gaga’s Enneagram: Type 4w3, The Aristocrat

Unlike the MBTI, which focuses on cognitive preferences, the Enneagram looks at the emotions underneath, shaping who we believe we are and what we need to feel whole.

Within this framework, Lady Gaga is likely a Type 4 (The Individualist), albeit with a Type 3 wing.

At the heart of every Type 4 Enneagram is a drive to discover one's true self and be understood for it. This is often borne from a fear of not having a clear identity or personal significance.

The 3-wing adds ambition, performance flair, and a deep desire to be seen, not just as successful, but as someone extraordinary. It’s what pushes her not only to feel deeply, but to express those feelings through creative reinventions and global stages.

Some people might see hints of a 5-wing in her lyrics and vulnerability in interviews, but 4w5s tend to withdraw and intellectualize their emotions. However, Gaga doesn’t hide behind theory.

She transforms her inner world into art meant to connect. Her blend of emotional intensity and outward expression is pure 4w3.

This is precisely what has played out in Lady Gaga’s journey.

She's gone from the girl raised in Manhattan’s Upper West Side to an incredible performer who duets with Tony Bennett, stars in films with Bradley Cooper, and sings at President Joe Biden’s inauguration.

To the discerning eye, these reflect the search for authentic identity and emotional connection that is typical of the Enneagram 4w3 personality.Take Enneagram Test

Lady Gaga Personality Type According to the Big 5

The final framework we’ll use to examine Lady Gaga's psyche is the Big Five, which measures personality along five key dimensions. Let’s look at her through these lenses:

Openness vs Closedness to New Experiences

The openness dimension typically speaks to a person’s curiosity and imagination. As you can imagine, Lady Gaga scores off the charts in this regard. This trait is most associated with creativity and a willingness to try new things, two qualities that we have already established Lady Gaga has in abundance.

Between her stint in the electronic dance-pop genre and her jazz performances, Gaga has shown remarkable range. From overly expressive fashion statements to simple, stripped-down acoustic sets like in A Star is Born, her openness extends far beyond music into visual art, fashion, acting, and even social causes.

Conscientiousness vs. Lack of Direction

While her public rebellious image might suggest otherwise, Lady Gaga’s disciplined dedication to her artistry over the years leans toward the conscientious end of this spectrum.

Her 2024 hit song, "Die With A Smile" with Bruno Mars, has now clocked over 1.2 billion streams on YouTube in just 10 months. Frankly, I don’t think anyone can remain as relevant in Music as long as she has done without a high dose of conscientiousness.

Gaga pays meticulous attention to detail in her creative projects, both in music and movies. For example, she gained weight for "House of Gucci" and learned to sing country for "A Star Is Born".

Many stars who hit it big early coasted on their success—but not Lady Gaga.

Extraversion vs. Introversion

As I said earlier, when it comes to extraversion or otherwise, Lady Gaga’s personality gets a little more complex. On stage, the lady exhibits signs of high extraversion—being very sociable, assertive, and drawing energy from interactions with the audience.

However, off the stage, when talking in interviews and in documentaries, she comes across more as someone who also values solitude.

Psychologists describe this pattern as “situational extraversion”, which is the tendency for an introverted individual to show highly extraverted traits when the situation calls for it.

Agreeableness vs. Antagonism

Lady Gaga demonstrates a high degree of agreeableness through her empathy and dedication to helping marginalised communities via various charitable commitments.

However, this is not agreeableness without principled boundaries.

Lady Gaga has shown in multiple public feuds with other public figures and friends that she is equally willing to be disagreeable when it comes to defending her values, ideas, or creative direction.

Neuroticism vs. Emotional Stability

Lady Gaga has always been open about her mental health struggles with anxiety and depression. And this would, at least, indicate a moderate to high level of neuroticism—the tendency to experience negative emotions intensely.

However, rather than let these experiences cripple her, following the path into narcotics dependency, she has instead channeled all that pain into her artistic expression and social activism.

The Complex Layers of Lady Gaga's Personality

It is not one single character trait that makes Lady Gaga the fascinating character she is, but rather how she displays seeming contradictions, threading the line ever so perfectly, rather than being boxed within any societal stereotypes.

Let's discuss these layers:

Performative but also Introspective

On one hand, Lady Gaga is boldly performative. I mean, what kind of character goes to an awards show wearing a dress and shoes made out of raw meat? Or struts her way around New York, wearing shoes that look like they would definitely cause anyone else to trip and twist their ankles?

Despite that, she has also shown the ability to be incredibly vulnerable and introspective.

This isn’t someone who is confused or is just trying to keep up with the Joneses. This is the natural result of a rich inner life meeting expressive public performance.

Gaga experiences emotions intensely and channels these through her art. It's like the kids say these days, Lady Gaga lives like one who is "loved at home."

Personal Resilience in Spades

One understated part of Lady Gaga’s persona is her resilience. She has faced several significant challenges in her life, including sexual assault from her music producer when she was only 19 years old, public backlash in the early days of her career, and really just the heavy demands of living in the spotlight as an A-list celebrity.

All of these have understandably caused her to have certain mental health struggles. But through it all, this amazing woman continues to create art and advocate for the underprivileged in society.

Emotional Intelligence That Connects

Another key part of Lady Gaga’s personality is her emotional intelligence. She’s deeply attuned to her own feelings and those of the people around her, which allows her to create art that resonates on a soul-deep level. You can see this in the way she connects with her fans—often making them feel seen and understood in a way few artists can match.

Her emotional awareness also shows up in her activism and collaborations. Gaga understands how to read a room, lift people up, and use vulnerability as a strength rather than a weakness. This kind of emotional intelligence is one reason she’s been able to build such a fiercely loyal community around her.

Your Turn: What Would Gaga Want You to Embrace About Yourself?

Lady Gaga’s personality type goes a long way in explaining both her massive success and the genuine impact she’s had on pop culture globally.

This isn’t someone who chased trends or engineered an image for applause. Gaga followed her instincts, created from the heart, and stayed true to herself—even when that self was shifting, messy, or misunderstood.

She also reminds us that no personality type is one-dimensional

Gaga embodies traits that can seem contradictory. Though her core is introspective and intuitive, she taps into her Extraverted Sensing function with striking precision. That balance between inner depth and outer expression is what keeps her so present in both her private world and public performance.

So, what can you take from this?

You might not be wearing meat dresses to award shows, but Gaga’s psychology can help you reflect on your own. Are you driven by meaning or image? Do you allow yourself to evolve? Do you show the world your uniqueness?

Whether or not you share her personality type, there’s something universal in her example: your inner world matters. Your quirks and contradictions aren’t flaws to tone down—they might be the very things that set you apart, connect you to others, and help you build a life you’re proud of.

In a world obsessed with surface-level artistry and activism, Gaga offers something deeper. That’s not just a "personality type." That’s a choice.

Now it’s your turn; what would Gaga want you to embrace about yourself? Take a moment to discover your personality type; you might be surprised by what it reveals.
